But getting approval of a ban in Champaign still appears to be a difficult task. Since the September vote, Ennen has gone from supporting a comprehensive ban to leaning against voting for one.

Ennen, who is a nurse and frequently mentions that fact during council debate, said she is listening to her constituents and is leaning against voting for the ordinance.

"At this point, the calls against it (a ban) are running about dead even with the calls to support it," she said. "I've had many more phone calls and personal contacts from people opposed to it . businessmen and -women who've put in their money to make their businesses go."

But Ennen said she won't make a final decision until she hears all the debate Tuesday.

Another key vote is Pirok, whose preference is to ban smoking in restaurants but allow it in bars.

"I intend to vote for a smoking ban in some form or another on Tuesday," he said. "Exactly which one it will be is still up in the air. It will depend on what's most likely to pass and what we can agree on."

[Marci Dodds] Marci Dodds
Council Member—District 4

Champaign, IL 61821

Term Expires 2007

Dodds, whose husband is part-owner of the Boltini Lounge in downtown Champaign, said she could support a comprehensive ban, but that she wants clubs like the VFW, American Legion and Champaign Country Club to be exempted.

That is the second major exemption Dodds has pushed. At her request, Rosales exempted outdoor patio areas from the smoking ban.
